If your work is not cited you may think that what you are doing has no impact to the scientific community. More importantly, new citation of my work signals that I am in the right scientific direction and potentially something new is coming in the near future as more people increasingly follow my work by citing it.
In fact self-citation indicate that more of your work are focused towards something. This is very important, since at the end of the day, you must count the sum of all your work in your carrier. The threat is only to overdo it
I fully agree. Yes, when I see that new quotations of my scientific publications, my considerations and conclusions from research are appearing, it is a very positive construction and acts as an additional motivation for the continuation and development of scientific research and writing of further scientific texts.
I believe citation on its own doesn't mean specific thing and we can't conclude much inforemation from it.
criticizing or mentioning old techniques that is believed to be inefficient, or just mentioning previous techniques in certain field can also come in the form of citiation.
With that being said I believe that proceeding with research on a certain topic should be based on other criteria such as the problem in concern, the need for futher investigation and the your interest and how expert you are in the field as mention by Dr. Leonid V Vladimirov .
My opinion is solely based on my limited experience research area and other fellows might have different opinions that am looking forward to hear.
