During my education and early working years I was greatly influenced by the books written by field naturalists like Edward Wilson, George Schaller and Alan Rabinowitz - great stories of travel, adventure and natural history. But who are the new writers in this field?

Not very recent (1995 & 2000), but I enjoyed very much 'Among whales' by Roger Payne and 'A fish caught in time, the search for the Coelacanth' by Samantha Weinberg.
Not sure if you'd call him a naturalist proper, but Wade Davis did some excellent books on travel, adventure and nature. My favorite is One River.
Not exactly new, but Redmond O’Hanlon's Congo Journey is worth mentioning.
Some excellent suggestions - but keep them coming! Especially curious to hear about any that were not originally written by English speakers ...... I just read the class "Serengeti shall not die" from the 1950's. Simply amazing stuff - and a powerful reinder that wildlife conservation has a long history!

Hi! It's a very interesting question. Here, in Chile, we have some naturalist journals but there are not recent books.
A terrific book of natural history from the neotropic is "A neotropical companion".

It depends what you're after - there are perhaps two quite distinct types of books that might fit your query:
1. Experiential books about nature - including the theory, philosophy and personal experience of human interaction with nature. Many of these are by people like George Monbiot and Robert Macfarlane, who are not field naturalists, but profoundly concerned with nature - although also Richard Mabey, who is a true naturalist.
2. Books about natural history by professional and amateur field naturalists who are deeply knowledgeable about their subject - such as the New Naturalists (http://www.newnaturalists.com/index.html) and the new series from British Wildlife Publishing (http://www.nhbs.com/series/185599/british-wildlife-collection), which include many of the best of these books by British writers. I'm less familiar with examples from the rest of the world.
He is not a naturalist, but the Brazilian sailor Amyr Klink (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amyr_Klink) has really nice books telling his travels with many references to fauna and geography. He has circumnavigated Antarctic completely alone and sailed from Antarctic to Arctic after spending the winter frozen in the south (besides having rowed from Africa to Brazil!). He wrote a book for each big journey he has made. I really enjoy reading his books.
One of the best places to keep up is the NHBS on-line bookstore web site (UK). They are incredibly well-stocked, reasonably-priced, used to international commerce and fast on delivery. For entomology, BioQuip (US) is good.
In Argentina: Juan Carlos Chebez, Tito Narosky and Juan Klimaitis. Unfortunately Chebez died a few years ago. My favourite is Juan Klimaitis

Bernd Heinrich has a couple of excellent books. One is all about ravens and also about their relationship with wolves, the other about how animals survive during the winter. I found both very interesting, informative and thought provoking.
Some of these are by naturalists/ecologists and others by science writers discussing naturalists. All good adventures with interesting natural history observations.
