Landscape ecology is a branch of science, a branch of ecology and geography that studies the spatial diversity and elements of a landscape (such as fields, hedgerows, tree groups, rivers, or cities) and how their location affects the distribution and flow of energy, and individuals in the environment (which in turn can directly affect the distribution of elements).

Landscape ecology usually deals with applied and holistic problems. The term landscape ecology was coined by Karl Troll, a German geographer in 1939. He developed this terminology and many early concepts of landscape ecology as part of his early work studying the interactions between the environment and vegetation.

The Central theory of landscape ecology is derived from MacArthur and Wilson's" theory of island biogeography". This work considered the totality of flora and fauna on Islands as a result of colonization from continental support and stochastic extinction.

This generalization accelerated the development of landscape ecology, ensuring the preservation of biodiversity — a new tool for assessing the impact of natural habitat fragmentation on the life of populations. The recent growth of landscape ecology is associated with the development of geographical information systems (GIS) technology and the availability of large-scale data on the natural environment (for example, satellite photos).

By another definition, landscape ecology is a branch of ecology that deals with the causes and consequences of spatial heterogeneity .

Heterogeneity is a criterion for how parts of the landscape differ from each other. Landscape ecology monitors how the geospatial structure affects the abundance of landscape-level organisms, as well as the behavior and functioning of the landscape as a whole. This includes the study of the pattern, or internal order of the landscape, in the process, or continuous action, of the functioning of organisms.

Landscape ecology also uses geomorphology as an application to the model and architecture of landscapes.
