Starting up a new business is proving to be a hard task for most of the entrepreneurs across the business world. The rate of failure within the first five years of business operations is still debatable and is said to be different from one economic zone to another. This is said to be depending on the various internal and external environmental forces operating in different industries. According to Griffith (2014), he postulates that over 60% to 70% of start-ups cannot survive beyond their first five years.
Most businesses fail because the entrepreneurs did not pay attention to the risk involved in the first place. All businesses carry risk but some carry greater risk. Bad business plan can increase the risk. Lack of capital and inability to access loan has frustrated young entrepreneurs and they just decide to pack up. Bad management is evidence of most closed business or doing badly business. A PhD will not help your business if you lack managerial skills. Lastly, all business starting up or already established should have a good insurance cover because you can be great with perfect ideas and good management skills but an unforseen event can easily shut you down. So a good insurance policy must be part of your business plan. This is my 10th year running my business. Its getting even better.

I think it is true, at least according to statistics. In Croatia it has to do with the prevailance of necessity entrepreneurs vs. opportunity entrepreneurs (GEM data).
It is juvenile to assume that justs because a business entity closes its doors it "failed." You need to define "failure." Inability to achieve goals? For the entity to exist past an arbitrary date? Or something else?
Keep in mind that just because the entity ceased to exist does not mean it "failed." It could mean that the shareholders decided that their investment was better put somewhere else. Or perhaps that their concept was an astounding success, and it was bought by another corporation.
Partially, it is true; partially, it is not! Most SMEs in the world die within five years. But most die within five years because they are created for their demise.
In high technology sectors, such as the biotechnology, there is a paradox. The start-up comes into being to die. It means that the entrepreneurs create such firms to sell at the earliest. My article deals with this issue. It is in the process, and it addresses 'an efficient exit-by-acquistion' strategy.
You need to better quantify "most" - indeed there is a high failure rate and services including small tourism enterprises feature strongly in this. There are a range of reasons - under capitalisation; over optimism; entering a market dominated by stronger competitors; poor or no business plan, wrong marketing strategy, lack of management experience; poor cash flow to cover slow months; partnership difficulties and running out of enthusiasm.

I agree to a point, but I am more geared to say that is is also 'not necessarily.' Businesses that fail in the first two years are definite for failure , yet, those that fail in after two years and within five have some base to rejuvenate their business if they utilize business analytics to understand their failure themes and learn about their opportunities under different business models. So, I agree with Malik and Bollinger on their answer. I do support the other contingent that the signs of failure are definite, and that the business closed its door for good. Come-backs are not awkward. Former businesses or thought to get out of business sometime figure out new and different business model to run their business and studies show that the do better. From personal experience running a medium size business for 16 years and from teaching related courses to your question, I believe that more business close within the first two year hold a higher percentage than those who are in business for five years.

Yes , particularly in the countries having high interest rate on the money borrowed from different sources. I do remember that during my visit to Brazil when it was worst hit by the heavy foreign debt and had abnormally high rate of interest, I was told that the business companies go bankrupt if the investment is not recovered within three years. Other reason may be the opening of businesses without systematic market research and planning of projects without carrying out proper project appraisal

By my observations, many new ventures have a business plan limited to the life cycle of the new products or services, which influences the closing data, perhaps, should guide the research, checking if there is a sequence of new business openings, with the same players.
1st of all - we need to define what type of start-up business in what industry!
It's interesting what do we consider start-up ... (SME in manufacturing or retails, technology etc) that require funding and they are created to be acquired etc. Most of the SME research is in this area.
If take into considerations of start-up like professional accountant, doctor, lawyer etc which we consider them as professional business - the start-up surviving rates very much higher.

Although most of the start-ups and new brands fail, a few of them move ahead further. One of the main reasons of their failure is the improper planning about the product and selection of the business markets.Some very good ideas fail mainly due to either lack of coordination in planning or due to inconsistency in the strategic planning ultimately leading to the failure of the products/ideas.
I think I am possibly regurgitating what others have already said. My wife finished her MBA and was in the process of applying for positions when she decided to register a new business. She had just registered the business, set up a website and start following up on leads when she received a lucrative job offer. She therefore did not proceed with a business. I would not regard that as failure, but she adds to the statistic of businesses that ceased to exist.
In the same way, I could start a business to sell ice cream in summer, and decide to stop selling ice-cream at the end of summer. Some businesses are started with a limited life in mind.

Point of disclosure: I teach strategic planning and management at he bachelors and masters level and I have also started a few small companies and run SME companies.
I was very interested in reading a number of the posts re what is failure. IMHO "failure" is not meeting the original goals of your plan due to a poor general plan, lack or understanding of your market, poor implementation, or no realistic financial and contingency planning.
A good plan always includes an exit plan, particularly in terms of financial exit,
BTW, bankruptcy can be a viable strategy properly used!!! Not totally an exit strategy if the Administrative Judge declares you in Chapter 7, "not a viable company." Then in simple terms, "you turnout the lights, put a note out for the milk man, lock the door and good home." In chapter 11 you get a chance to redeem yourself and try again. Remember corporations can do a chapter 11 every 2 or 3 tears. If memory serves, United Airlines had used chapter 11 at least three times.
At some point your investors are going to want to cash out. So other "not failures"...going public through an IPO. Selling all, or a part, of your company to another, generally larger, company. Or a Merger. As the founder, you get to also cash out, and many times the company who bought you will keep you on for year or two as a consultant at a suitable consulting fee. So, "not a failure" by any extent. Just some thoughts.
I see it as a reality rather than a myth because many small business owners start businesses without adequate preparations in terms of capital, location, infrustructure, marketing research, business education and the like. A survey conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics [NBS] in 2014 and 2015 revealed that out of 154,618 surveyed enterprises, only 72,380 (46.81%) existed for more than 5 years (NBS, 2016) means that 53.19% die before they reach their 5th anniversaries. Many of them lack strategies to sustain business operations beyond 5 years.

Jako Volschenk and Charles von Urff yelled about lack or poor planning on the side of mosst entereprenurs as a reason for their mass failure. It is also good to understand that many enterprenurs embark on business not for the sake of doing business but rather as looking for a living following retrenchment, retirement and the like. In such circumstances planning becomes a nightmare and for sure one has to fail. It is therefore important for us in the business adminkistration endervours to keep on propagating the importnce of planning and strategizing business startups even in an environment that we need money the most.
