I'm wondering if there are papers that deal with data flows, especially from business perspective? In practical situations it would be good to be able to describe (and visualize) logical data flows from sources to parties that make use of the data. Typically, there are numerous sources, processing steps and utilizing parties.
In practice, almost every time people start to describe integration tools, databases or other technical data processing tools/methods instead of data flows. However, in order to support data-driven business processes, data flows should be designed first, without technical implementation.
I would be grateful for any theory or practice oriented ideas, models, frameworks or hints about papers that deal with describing data flows.
Ossi, this was the subject of my thesis project for my master's degree. I have worked with many of the data flow modeling methods at some point in my career, and have developed a few of my own for addressing specific types of data flow challenges. If you care to talk off line, give me a call.
Ossi Ylijoki The standard ANSI/ISA-95 (IEC 62264) defines objects and models used for data integration between the different levels of information systems (i.e. SCADA, PLC, DCS and ERP, SCM, etc.) in the areas of Production, Maintenance, Quality and Inventory.

Yourdan-DeMarco is a good place to start with data flow diagrams; however, they do little to explain the transformation from the logical design to the physical design. Chapter 8 in my text entitled Systems Development examines software packaging whereby the data flow design can be transformed into structure charts, thus forming the software design. Business examples are used in this and other chapters. (Systems Development, Scott Foresman, Little-Brown, 1987) Hope this helps.
