What are the basis on which researchers choose mode-locked fiber laser to be ring or linear cavity. Apparently, mode-locked linear cavity fiber lasers seems to have simple, straightforward cavity design compared to ring cavity, which has relatively complex design. Linear cavity can be built with fewer optical components, and mode locking can be easily achieved.

What are the main pros and cons between these two designs ?
The primary reason to use a ring is to avoid the nodes you get in a standing wave that forms in a linear cavity. The laser extracts very little gain near the nodes. That is inefficient, but much more importantly that is unstable. You may start out with the mode you want, but it uses up all the gain at its antinodes (spatial hole burning). Now there is a lot of gain left that can be extracted by any mode except the one you want. This makes it much harder to force the cavity to stay in the desired mode.
This is just one of many similar interference effects that show up in single mode lasers that are averaged out and don’t matter in a multimode laser.
