When performing photocatalysis experiment e.g. TiO2 photodegradation of methylene blue, there are no clear measure that contributes the efficiency of the photocatalytic. I am wondering if there are any references that can be provided that illustrates the different efficiency equations that people use to report the efficiency of their photocatalyst or lists the contributing factors in the efficiency? Most of the literature reading I have read don't elaborate nor provide methods they used to quantify the efficiency.

You can measure the efficiency of a photocatalyst or a photocatalytic process in various process. 1. the degradation efficiency of the dye in the photodegradation process, 2. the kinetic rate constant of the degradation process compared with previous reports, 3. reuse ability of the photocatalyst, 4. stability of the photocatalyst after the reuse process.

Mohamed Ali, There can be many various measures of efficience. This could be substrate conversion, it could be the yield of the product. If there are several chemical reactions catalyzed by the photocatalyst, it may be selectivity. Life time, stability and energy used may also be important. From this point of view, there is no difference between conventional catalysts and photocatalysts. As for equations/functions, it depends what relationship you want to describe.

The efficiency of a photocatalytic process is governed by many parameters. Catalyst dose, concentration of the dye, pH, presence of other ions/species in the reaction mixture, light intensity etc are few parameters. Also you need to determine COD, as decrease in the absorbance at λmax = 665 nm or decrease in colour intensity does not necessarily mean degradation has happened. You can measure the degradation efficiency by plotting % removal(Co-Ct) /Co vs time., where Co & Ct where Co = initial concentration & Ct= concentration at time t.
Continuing the topic of possible dependencies of efficiency measures on, for example, photocatalyst concentration or light intensity, one should expect mainly empirical equations/functions.
