keep working as surgeon, do research in your field and teach students in your field. This is how it should go. You may start with any of them when it is available for you then add the other one when you get a chance.
The two are not mutually exclusive. If you want to continue medical education to the higher level, your involvement in medical and health(care) research will be necessary for your success in education. Further, research contributions and awareness lead to better practice and better academic performance in medical education. Therefore, good practitioners never turn their back to research.
