A colleague is trying to find out the methane levels inside a cow's rumen after feeding with a certain foodstuff. How does he measure the differences, how long should he wait, and how does he create a baseline for his comparisons? thanks!
There are couple of methods through you can determine enteric emissions from feeding particular feed to the dairy cows and/or ruminants. SF6 is one of the method usually in many research labs. all over the world. The other methods are respiration chambers, it may be closed or open. So, for determining enteric methane from specialized lab. is needed.
Our work in 200 liter reactors showed that the methane generated is a function of the feed stock, temperature, pH, and nutrient mix. it is also a function of how the rumen is managed.
