I will answer your question with a question, "what is the problem you are interested in solving?" Associated with this are two others, "What is the hardware environment?" and "What is the software environment you want to use?" Thoughtful consideration of these to generate answers will help you answer your question by elimination of the extraneous and so narrowing down potential possibilities. Also, an additional factor to the security problem that most fail to consider is Time. [If you are focused on defending in "Real Time" is a completely different problem than an "After the Fact" analysis, for example.] The current "state of the art" in the areas you mention are now (with the advent of massive compute power using GPUs) more focused on not being detected (steganography) than being too complex for practical decryption, but when strength of encryption is required the techniques and concepts from spread spectrum frequency hopping combined with variable clock timing and strong multiple keys managed dynamically adapted, would seem to offer incremental improvement possibilities based on cost effective hardware advances.
To simplify my rambling, I would think reprogramming a modern cell phone (one which already has multiple antennas and parallel processing capabilities from its GPS support) to embed another communications channel or more would be a topic that would interest your Thesis committee. Further, if it were an Android phone you could work in Python and a lot of the resources would be provided by the environment. Not sure if this would meet you hardware component requirement, but you could propose it and see.

I would suggest you focus on a certain details like if you are interested in working with hardware for cybersecurity protection or if you deal on software what would be the common or best practices software used by the industry.
