Being naive in statistical aspects of phylogeny , I want to understand following two statements with respect to Maximum Likelihood approach of phylogenetics.

1. Likelihood is quantity proportional to the probability of observing the data given the model

2. Likelihood is a product of the probabilities for different sites

whether above two statements have a link??
