I made use of this classification for issues in genetic and applied sedimentology:

High-grade limestone: 100 to 95 % (carbonate minerals, limestone)

Marly limestone: 95 to 75 % (")

Calcareous marl: 75 to 65 % (")

Marl: 65 to 35 % (")

Clay (ish) marl : 35 to 25 % (")

Marly clay/ claystone: 25 to 5 % (")

High grade clay (e.g. kaolin, bentonite, hormite..): 5 to 0 % (")

The rest is made up of non-carbonate minerals such as silica and clay minerals.

I had an issue form the nomenclature, our SOG recommended as to write Limestone, Marly rather than Marly Limestone. during our work at Rigsite and cutting descriptions.

I believe its more practical rather than academic nomenclature.

“Marly” is here an adjective modifying the noun “limestone” and by the conventions of English grammar should be placed before the noun. One also might speak of a “limy marl”.

I do not know why you changed marly limestone to limestone marly?

I think it is not correct ! However I have a point related to the word "Marl".

Marl is clay + calcium carbonate in general... so when we will describe limestone with a ratio of clay may be better use Clayey limestone..

Again marly limestone still in use for describing limestone with clay content.

the two terms are not linked together

we used to write : Marly Limestone, Redish brown...etc BUT we've changed to: Limestone,Marly,Redish brown, ...etc on our final master log.

marl is a sedimentary rock type made up of carbonate minerals such as calcite and non-carbonate minerals such as silica and clay minerals which can be handled lithologically like a common solid-solution series in mineralogy composed of Na feldspar and Ca feldspar known as plagioclase s.s.s., to say it in very simple way.

There are some Na/Ca ratios which define a special plagioclase and which have been given special names like oligoclase or bytownite. If you handle your issue in the same way during your field work you wil be on the safe side.

For me, I still use the term marly limestone in my papers.

marl , marly limestone , yes its calcite + clay minerals and generally its deep sedimentary environment , but not always like this composition , for example ; dolomite + palygorskite clay minerals in shallow marine tidal facies associations , or calcite/ or dolomite with clays in fresh water carbonates ,

So I prefer to delete this name '' Marl'' and use Clay Limestone or Dolostone or Calcareous/ dolomitic Shale and use slightly , highly to show the ratio of clay and calcite or dolomite ratio.

now we have logical name with sedimentological applications

Depending on the proportion of lime or clay, limestones, marl stones and mudstones are mentioned. Up to 15% of clay becomes clayey limestone up to 15% of carbonate becomes lime clay. In between are marls.

That's what I've used as nomenclature so far. In terms of educational conditions, you really can not always depend on facies.

The term marly limseone not correct, because it means 75% calcite and 25 clay content and therefore its better to say argillaceous limestone.

I suppose marly limestone and limestone, marly are both correct expressions, although the latter one might be less common. In the oilfield glossary of Schlumberger its written: "Marl is a sedimentary rock containing a mix of clay and calcium carbonate. Compositionally, marls comprise 35% to 65% clay and 65% to 35% calcium carbonate. Thus, marl encompasses a spectrum that ranges from calcareous shale to muddy or shaly limestone." A marly limestone, or a limestone, marly should then have less than 35% clay on average, but this clay must also be unevenly distributed so to reach locally concentrations of more than 35% , in order to be able to form marl in the limestone, like in nodular limestone; otherwise, when the clay is more evenly distributed and everywhere remains below 35%, you can not have a marly limestone or limestone, marly and need to call it a clayey limestone.

The ratio of clay in limestone can change the name from argillaceous limestone .

I was taught as an undergraduate over 45 years ago to avoid using the term marl as it was too imprecise. That point is still valid today but regrettably many geologists still use the term marl today = confusion. In the area I grew up spreading chalk / limestone on the ploughed clay soil fields was refered to as "marling". Thus marl is an agricultural term and is not geological.

what is the difference between the terms "marly limestones" and "very marly limestones", which were used in the book titled "Foundation Design and Construciton"?

Marl often referred to an argillaceous limestone and the term is mostly used in Field parlance only.

I think its not right to use marl with limestone, when there is clay with the linestone we can say argillaceous limestone up to 40%

if it becomes 50% then it could be changes to marlstone(50%clay and 50%%calcites)

so neither marly limestone nor limestone marly are correct .The correct one is the argillaceous limestone with ratio of clays from1% to 49% of clay.
