We have a project on Maize (Zea Mays) in which we use NDVI values to ascertain if values can be used for yield prediction as well as fertilizer recommendations. We collect the data using a quad-copter drone with multi-spectral camera. Will there be a significant difference in NDVI values of an early morning flight vs a midday flight vs a late afternoon flight on Maize at the same location on a sunny/some cloud cover day?
Possibly, yes. Diurnal NDVI variations have been used to measure, for example, heliotropism (DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0106613) or water stress (DOI: 10.1016/j.rse.2012.12.024).
Yes. We have observed some differences, which are due to leaf curling. This occurs because the curling lowers the LAI for corn under soil moisture stress, and in response to heat stress in the middle of the day versus in the morning.
With any kind of leaf curling, NDVI data will be lower. Without the presence of stress, NDVI readings collected early in the morning or late at night should be very similar, as this parameter is highly correlated with wet and/or dry biomass.
