We need to purchase a new -20 freezer for our lab. Looks like VWR does not carry manual defrost units and Fisher wants over 5K for a small one. I have also tried sourcing one from different restaurant equipment supply vendors without success. I know manual defrost has always been considered best, especially for enzymes, virus stocks, and antibodies. We use one of those rack storage systems where the boxes are inside of drawers in the racks. Most of the volume of the freezer is occupied. I am thinking the defrost cycle will never run long enough to get warm enough to change the temperature of the boxes. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Is there a compelling reason to stick with the manual defrost?
