Tatiana Garanina, I don't think students find a subject like accounts boring. Use a Digital Tab on Microsoft whiteboard, elaborate the concepts with examples. You can Make short videos explaining the concepts or you can go for live teaching via an online platform. use short quizzes. There are so many platforms available for making your quiz attractive and entertaining. I agree with you that many undergraduate students with majors other than finance and accounting think of these courses as boring. My experience with MBA students with work experience is that nearly all understand the value of learning finance and accounting even if they might not list those as their favorite courses.

Due to COVID-19, our AACSB college largely shifted from traditional in-person to an asynchronous online format. I am teaching the common core BBA finance course, required for all majors and the common core MBA finance course. I am recording lectures using PPT with the voice over feature and then supplementing with demonstration segments using the Webex record screen feature. I convert these to MP4 files, upload to Mediasite, and then post on the university platform D2L - Brightspace. My MBA students create presentations of Harvard Business Review cases studies using PPT voice recordings which I then share with the class.

This approach allows for both the traditional lecture format and somewhat more interactive content using the BA 2 Plus calculator, MS Excel, student projects, and supplementary websites. I find this asynchronous online approach substantially more time consuming to organize than teaching in person but much of this material will be reapplied to future terms. I also use material from McGraw Hill via their platform CONNECT to manage homework, quizzes, and exams. I've also used the newly added Proctorio software this Fall 2020 term. Unfortunately, academic misconduct remains a concern as the marketing around the Proctorio software appears to exceed the current capacity of the software.

We use Microsoft Office Teams for the delivery of online classes. I have used the following online tools in my accounting classes and they seem to have worked well.

1. I personally always prefer demonstrating accounting questions on board so the best alternative to that in online mode is the use of Microsoft Whiteboard.

2. In addition, I like to use Microsoft Forms or Kahoot. Kahoot is in fact a more fun option to administer MCQs that keep them engaged and competitive.

3. Another alternative to ppt is the use of Mindmeister. It is visually more appealing and great to capture student attention.

4. Poll Everywhere is also good to add to the mix.

I usually prepare some sessions before class and may ask students to watch it during or after class. This is followed up with questions that students can attempt on their own.

For delivering the online class we have used Microsoft Teams. It gives access based on e-mail id. If there is a University provided e-mail id safety against external nuisance is enhanced, since the class can be accessed only through that e-mal.

For teaching numerical subjects like Finance, one can use the Pen tablets to write digitally. While 'White board' can be used, better functionality can be achieved even with "Power Point" slides. One can take a blank slide and use the "inking" functionality in Power point. One can write or annotate on the slides using this function. Another useful function is "Convert to Shapes". If this button is highlighted , it will convert lines drawn on the screen to Arrows automatically. This can help you draw graphs, better.

I am one of the accounting professors who struggles with "accounting is boring issue." I think there are different opinions to overcome this issue. Some of my colleagues assign discussion boards and assign marks to it. I do not follow that path since I only want to mark evidence of accounting knowledge by solving problems. Some professor have virtual classes, I do not follow that path either since the number of students join the virtual classes is minimum if not none. Another reason is that in online lecturing your freedom is your laptop screen, wheres in a classroom setting the whole white/black board is yours and your gestures is an added value. Besides real life stories help collecting more students in a classroom. There is no easy solution. New generation learns from internet and don`t like reading. I am taking Quality Matters courses in order to make my online classes more effective. I think the best way is to build a good structure then let the students follow it. I assign weekly practice quizzes (with no marks attached), weekly quizzes (marks attached), 2 midterm exams and one final all online. Advise them that first they should do reading, then take the practice and take the real quiz (I give them 3 attempts for each question so that they can learn while taking these quizzes). On the exams they have one trial only. Besides I tell them that I am available any time they want. They can reach me through e mail or cell phone and also I can talk to them face to face through Zoom. These are my tools that I use to make an online class an effective one.

Here are 3 tips:

1. I pre-record lectures in short, 10-minute or so lengths. For example, overview of inventory methods is 1, then also 1 each: Fifo, Lifo, Average, Specific Id, Comparison of income/inventory effects of methods. Students are expected to watch these asynchronously. Shorter length works well for shorter attention span, and helps non-traditionals who have a few minutes while their children are at soccer practice. This works well in non-covid times as well for athletes and others who have to travel or otherwise miss class. I post these on YouTube, with a link in Blackboard. Feel free to link in to any of these that you like.

2. Where feasible, I keep my synchronous online class lectures short in favor of group class activities. Students may find accounting lectures boring, but consider a 20 -minute exercise where "X company sold 20,000 units" with chart of beginning inventory/purchases, "what inventory expense, or "Cost of Goods Sold," should we match against revenue this period?" This encourages students to think critically, and research. Those who have watched the required lectures look pretty smart, so there's internal incentive to come to class prepared. Accounting tends to be logical, so they tend to learn the right material. Groups present their answers and I can questions and praise their critical thinking and compare across groups. Sample test questions or group quizzes are also popular. That is, the less I talk, the more interested students seem to be :/

3. I ask them to turn their cameras on (mikes are muted unless they're speaking). Seeing each other face-to-face is more engaging for them.
