Thanks for the recommendation. VitiCanopy is actually the only app readily available to download so I'll give it a try. I'm going to use it in Scots pine and in a larch forest canopy so I'll just adjust extinction coefficient to 0.52 (Pierce and Running, 1988) and see how realistic the results is going to be.

Thank you for the links to the papers. I've actually red most of them before I asked. What was not clear to me was that the papers (co)authored by Roberto Confalonieri generally shows good agreement of the PocketLAI with other methods like LAI2200 (with the exception of coniferous shrubs). But in the work of Qu et al. (2017) PocketLAI underestimated LAI by about 50% while his LAISmart system provided accurate data. I did not find more papers by people who were not part of the team who developed those two apps. That's why I was wondering about experience of someone independent.

well, yes, as it is a still-under-development technology, I guess, the best way to know is to evaluate it by yourself. Compare it with already confirmed methods and share your conclusions with the whole tree ecophysiology community :)

We want to estimate LAI for plants at high altitude sites (1000-3000 masl) at Argentina NW. We are going to experiment with VitiCanopy. I can`t find a site to download PocketLAI or LAISmart.

Yes, it can be used for various various species. It may underestimate at high LAI and conifers but that's what you need to check for.

Nothing special. Extinction coefficient should be set to 0.7 for broad-leaved plants. At some point you may want to calibrate the Viti canopy against directly (i.e. destructively) measured leaf area.

I'm doing a comparative analysis of different retrieval methodologies, and I have four in situ datasets from different parts of the world. I have measured the LAI with LicorLAI in three datasets and the fourth with PocketLAI. The PocketLAI data seems coherent at the moment, getting an R2 = 0.70 when I compare it with the Sentinel-2 LAI automatic product. With PocketLAI I have measured alfalfa, oats, barley, potato and wheat crop types.

How do the apps mentioned assess LAI?

It seems that in one leaf layer it is strait forward but what us going on when the canopy is denser?

Are there any comparisons of the apps with real LAI data (i.e., based on destructive plant samples)?

There are different studies in which they compare the destructive measures with the estimated LAI with PocketLAI, for example:
