It must, as far as possible, be controlled, rigorous, systematic, valid and verifiable, empirical and critical, and most importantly, be helpful and useful for community and population it targets
In addition to its nobility and originality as mentioned above, its ability to resolve a fundamental, practical and hard pressing local, regional and global challenges, its contribution to new discovery and innovation, its power to transform the living standard of the society and most importantly its power of reproducible and transparency, ..., are, I believe, some of the key features of a good research.
In my opinion the toolbox, the methods, the research, is the most important for a scientific research. Because if the whole study is not appropriate, even the idea fails.
As per my understanding a good research must seal the putative gaps(problems) identified before. Here the research must answer the identified problems and come with ample solutions.
