I'm a Materials Engineering student, currently doing my undergraduate final project. I'm doing the anodization of Aluminum 5052 in 15%wt sulfuric acid for 1 hour. How do I measure the thickness of the anodized layer?

I've tried using a light microscope (after grinding-polishing the cross section side) but didn't find a clear distinction between the aluminum substrate and the anodized layer. Do I need to etch it first?

I found on ASTM B 487-85 that the solution for etching anodized aluminum is Hydrofluoric Acid (HF) do I have other option?

Attached is the pictures I obtained from the microscope and the photo of my specimen

Thank you for your attention.

Regards,

Intan
