I would develop a fast approach to quantify annual seed production in oak (and chestnut) forests, to compare with quantitative data obtained by seed traps. I think that digital photography could assist in this aim. Any idea?
I just now saw your question when all the acorns and chestnuts have already been fired away for this year. I guess that's the easiest way is to set up a pad with known area that contrasts with the color of acorns before seeds falling. The number of acorn on the pad can be used to calculate the seeds production per area unit (ha). Maybe the SHAPE program can be used to automatize the counting of acorns. Recognition of acorns on the digital image of natural ground is difficult.
