Dear experts, I would like to know what is your opinion on descriptive writing. I realised that writing something descriptively can be seen as one of the worst qualities as an writer (e.g., writing a college assignment). However, I understand that sometimes we have to write something descriptively to inform some readers about an unfamiliar subject (e.g., a flying car assembly tutorial, a menu in French, or a Youtube video about aliens). So, my question is should human beings always need to be vigilant about their surroundings and be so critical about everything? Aren't people eligible to have a moment to lay back and write some descriptive things that makes mutual understanding possible?
What is your say? What is important to make such a judgement like that?
Wenyang Wei Feel free to write in any style you want. I am sure you will attract your audience of similar interest, whatever it is. Narratives are also interesting to read, in my viewpoint.
Zoncita D. Norman Thank you very much for your insightful response. This makes me feel much relieved because I think the universities are generally against descriptive kind of writing. It is just unfair for someone who really wants to tell some difficult or unfamiliar things to some readers. In fact, I do not think writers have to be critical every time they write.
Lyudmil Antonov I think this idea is pretty much assimilated everywhere in universities, especially in Social Sciences and Humanities. Many lecturers would expect that students should be more critical about certain stuff. Write critically is the key. While I understand the importance of criticality, I do not think we should always do such a thing like that.
One can be critical and descriptive at the same time. These are different things. Nowadays, with the world-wide accessibility of the web, social sites, etc. and especially the last 1-2 years with the advent of AI, the volume of written material increased exponentially. People cannot cope with the sheer volume of information. This is the reason, I suppose, that the concise, clear, and up-to-the-point prose became more valuable.
A piece of composition , which sits on the constructive panel of descriptive writing usualy evokes compelling graphics which attract the eye of critical dissolution.
It is so because the description of an idea, gizmo, event, and paradox requires critical landscapes to quadrate perception to experimental resolution amongst other reasons.
