When we look at the literature, we see the fact that nation states lose their traditional sovereignty, independence and security with the increase of globalization and interdependence. Is this true?
Is it indirectly providing security to states, as interdependence reduces the risk of war? What do you think about this?
The notion of Nation State and security is a narrow approach.You need to look at Empires, that is area of influence to which such nation states belong, or which they may orient.
Let me remind you that before the collapse of USSR, there were two major blocks:
-USSR alliance, Warsaw Pact etc
-USA alliance, NATO, etc
The division of the world into two parts, in first approximation, is now over. However, you have new clusters to look at:
-League of Arab States
basically they share the Muslim religion, Arabic language knowledge, but each state has its level of wealth (from very wealthy to not so wealthy at all).
-Western countries roughly... with the USA as a special case.
-Developing countries, with increasing investment from China
-China, with a very powerful economy, lots of science and high tech
-India, a very large country, with high tech, space technology, software leadership
-Russia, as a bridge between Europe and Asia, very rich in raw material and energy sources, with very strong science tradition
-Canada which is among the Western countries above, is also a huge territory with minerals, and energy sources.
Another aspect which is different is communication. Where does the incoming and outgoing Internet Protocol traffic physically go?
This hints to another dependency for the digital era... Countries cannot live well in isolation, commerce and communication are needed, agreements are also needed and maybe they come first for the sake of peace between countries (peace treaties, etc).
I would say that Internet killed nation states security. Now the warfare is moved to cyber space, but very few nations are ready for that.
