Though it is certainly not the best way to assess students in higher education, MCQs are being used more and more often. I'm not trying to pick up a list of pros and cons but rather trying to figure out if there are some guiding lines on how to use them that have ever been produced and/or research aiming at offering and testing such guiding lines.
Multiple-choice quizzes can be valuable as long as they are not limited to rote learning of concepts that will never be used. It would be advisable, for example, to set up a case study and, based on that case, design the multiple-choice questions.
