RETScreen is an extraordinary tool to perform techno/economic pre-feasibility and feasibility analyses. The major goal is to develop an appropriate life-cycle cost analysis of a proposed technology vs a base case.
In your case, if you have waste recovery implementation, you'll need to find a provider of market equipment and get the performance and cost parameters to introduce its efficiency in the worksheet. If you are developing your own waste recovery technology, you'll need to have the operating performance parameters (basically the efficiency), capital cost and O&M cost. With all that information, you'll need to add the financial parameters (inflation, energy escalation rate, FIT, etc.).
As in previous comments, there are many case studies to review within the tool. Remember it's 100% free (current version needs MS-EXCEL to run, but upcoming version in 2016 will be standalone). Thanks to National Resources Canada and RETScreen team!!
It's very simple once you start using it. I highly recommend it.
