i have come across some Profs who are editors of journals and scholars in their fields. Their nomenclature often read;
Prof. Dr. XXXX YYYY
or
Prof. (Dr.) XXXX YYYY
or for some
Prof. XXXX YYYY [Ph.D]
I thought to be a Prof. you must be a Ph.D holder.
Is there any need adding the "Dr."? I thought the Prof title outranks the Dr. thus covering for it! This also goes to medical doctors who are Ph.D holders and are also Professors in their field.
i only seek clarification.
Well for me those that are adding Dr to their professorial title are mainly those in the medical field so they want to draw a clear cut line between academic Doctor and medical Doctor. So those who add are mostly those in the medical field while others could have reasons best known to them or Ignorance. That's my take on this subject matter. Thanks
I do not agree that the title Prof outranks Dr. Professor is an academic rank while the Dr. is a title earned from the acquisition of the highest academic degree Ph.D.(Doctor of philosophy or wisdom, if you like). It is an error that Bachelor degree holders in Medicine and Surgery in a country like Nigeria could parade themselves as Dr. Accumulation of even a hundred Bachelor degrees can never translate to a Ph.D. like we have in bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor in Surgery (MBBS). We understand what it takes to be a Ph.D. holder. It is no joke. Prof. Dr. is mostly used, if remember correctly, in Germany. Whatever the case, it is just a title.
