For the Bayer villager reaction there are totally 4 ways as per my knowledge is concerned
1) process using direct the MCPBA as oxidizer agent as mentioned above
2)heterogeneous process using Sn based catalyst like Sn-Beta Sn mesoporous materials using Direct H2O2 as oxidant
3)Using heterogeneous Sn catalyst but use of oxidizer agent that is Tertiary butyl hydrogen peroxide
4) use of molecular Oxygen can also favor the reaction in presence of sacrificial reagent like Benzaldehyde which forms in situ peroxide and oxidizes the substrate and give rise to the lactone and benzoic acid ( side product)
If you ask my opinion 2 nd route is best and green,
if you think of economic i cant say bcoz you may be knowing the Cost and production of H2O2 , if you compensate in some other factors you can really can commercialize the process
