There was a paper by MacCann et al., (2010), entitled something like "EI in the eye of the beholder". It looked at EI components in children and parents. Not altogether sure though. Perhaps look at the literature around the recently developed ability test (MSCEIT) for children.

I would suggest finding the research of Suzanne Denham. She has been doing work on this topic for many years. An excellent review may be found in:
Linda Rose-Krasnor & Susanne Denham (2009) SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL COMPETENCE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD. In Rubin, K.H., Bukowski, W., & Laursen, B. (Eds.). (2009). Handbook of Peer Interactions, Relationships, and Groups. New York: Guilford.
Excellent suggestions: both Denham and Halberstadt's work. It's about remembering that EI is an umbrella term that includes emotion perception and emotion regulation so work in those fields is directly relevant. Don't just search specifically for work conducted on EI; use work from those other fields.
There was a paper by Alegre, A., Benson, M.J. & Pérez-Escoda, N. Maternal warmth and early adolescents’ internalizing symptoms and externalizing behavior: Mediation via emotional security. Journal of Early Adolescence. Prepublished September 27, 2013, DOI: 10.1177/0272431613501408.
This study examines the relation between maternal warmth and the internalizing and externalizing problems of early adolescents, and the potential mediation of this relation by emotional insecurity.
