In medicinal chemistry there are many articles highlighting the importance of small molecules as medicinal agents. But nobody defines a small molecule. Is there any specific definition for the same.
I don't think the term is precisely defined in terms of molecular weight. It refers to so-called drug-like molecules, organic compounds that typically have molecular weights less than about 600, although for natural products the molecular weights can be over 1000. The key distinction is between small molecules (the traditional products of pharmaceutical companies) and large biopolymers, especially polypeptides and proteins (but also RNA- and DNA-based therapeutics), the traditional products of biotech companies, with molecular weights ranging upwards from a few thousand. So it's really more about the nature of the molecules rather than their size.
