We have a Practical Exam on Enterobacteriaceae. We had urine as our sample. We planted it on MacConkey Agar and Blood Agar Plate. After 24 hours, we had no growth on MAC. So we performed biochem test, and the results was suited for Citrobacter spp.
Our only main problem was that it never grew on MAC.
As far as I know, they grow, but if they are in very few numbers or injured, they may fail to grow

Citrobacter spp. bacteria have late lactose fermenter; therefore Non Lactose Fermented after 24 hours; Lactose fermented after 48 hours; colonies are light pink after 48 hours

Citrobacter spp.should have grown on MacConkey agar. A possible answer is that there was a low concentration in the urine, and it was present in the loop when you plated on blood agar and not when you plated on MacConkey. Make sure the sample is homogeneous before plating it.

Citrobacter very possible to grow on MaCconky agar , but in this case can took a smear from good grow on blood agar and culturing on MaCconky to solve the problem
