Beef extract provide many nutrients to the culture media thus is an important element of it. But the use of beef extract is not ethical enough to be accepted as the only source for it.
Is there any other substitute which is ethical and can be used in place of beef extract?

Yes, Yeast Extract can be used as a substitute to beef extract, as it provides proteins, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals.
However, both creatine and creatinine is absent in yeast extract, hence it depends upon the requirement of the culture. You can also check addition of peptone to yeast extract.
