As I don't have necessary instruments for making the Coin Cell for battery material testing, i'm looking for alternative options for making Cell and testing.
Depending on the materials used, you could try the 'beaker approach': only reasonable for primary elements, this is how the first batteries were developed:
- Put anode and cathode into a beaker.
- Don't forget the electrical connections!
- Fill the beaker with the electrolyte required.
That's it. Even slightly complexer setups (eg. including a membrane) can be solved in this 'lab style'.
This won't work for any materials that cannot be operated 'open air'. These require not only the equiment to enclose them hermetically but also quite likely the equipment to process them in a protective atmosphere.

The answers of U. Dreher and Raam Kasinathan are correct: you can use beaker calls and cells of the Swagelok type, for example. As far as I know, there is no complete “Swagelok cell” available at all. This might be true in many or all countries. “Swagelok cell” just means that a cell is build using the corresponding fittings. There are also commercial test cells that you can use, e.g. the “EQ-SC-18650 Split Type Test Cell” or the cells available from EL-CELL. If you have a good workshop you can build similar test cells on your own. You can also use pouch cells (the coffe-bag type) – you need a device that seals the bags then (foil welding machine, thermosealing device). You can find the videos “How is a Lithium-Ion Pouch-Cell Manufactured in the Lab?” or “MTI Pouch Cell Assembly Steps” online showing the fabrication using sophisticated equipment. To mount the cells or to do tests with a beaker cell, you need a moisture-free environment if you want to study lithium metal or lithium ion battery materials. This can be done in a dry room for the larger scale (e.g. commercial) or in an argon-filled glove box (as done in most research institutes). If you don’t have access to that, you can use an argon-filled plastic bag, e.g. the commercial Atmosbag glove bag. Alternatively, you could fabricate your own plastic bag with or without gloves – make sure that you don’t have any moisture inside. Keep in mind that lithium can react with nitrogen if there is any moisture or if the lithium is wetted with electrolyte. Argon is the best inert gas since Li reacts with CO2 as well.
