You can use ultrasonic pulse echo method to measure the depth of the case hardened specimens. You will receive two reflected signals, one from the case hardened interface and other from the back wall(See image attached). The time of arrival can be used to calculate the depth.

Hi, try to use the ultrasonic waves inspection. Use the reflecting pulse method to calculate the depth of the defect from the specimen surface. The transmission pulse method can detect the presence of the defect only. Good luck.
