Open porosity or water permeable porosity is known to be an important parameter in the study of liquid water ingress in concrete. Has there been any significant research in this area with any substantial general insights? Please advice on the same.
We have developed a theoretical model for water absorption of concrete that can predict the final absorption and the rate of absorption using a few data. We have not related this model to other concrete properties and it is something for a researcher to work on. If you have data you can try it and see if it is useful for your research. The thesis is in Portugues but I can see if we can prvide you with the translation of this section.
Using microtomography to get 3D microstructures of concrete, and then using percolation theory to analyse the connectivity of pores, we can get open porosity of the samples. I emphasis that only 3D images can estimate open porosity.
