many transparent objects, for example those made of plastic, exhibit colors under application of a force, if they are brought between two polarizing sheets. This effect is based on birefringence at anisotropic media, and is known as photoelasticity. The kind of color depends on the amount of force applied (and the orientation of the polarizing sheets), so beautiful patterns of color are created according to the patterns of force.
