The usage of ketoprofen gel instead of normal ultrasound gel in treating plantar fasciitis/OA of knee with ultrasound therapy - is there any proven benefit/better outcomes?
Dear Arvinder, There are several published studies on this topic. Clinical trials of most NSAIDs demonstrate a higher efficacy of topical ketoprofen compared to placebo, but similar to oral NSAIDs for people with mild to moderate OA of the knee or hand (1). Unfortunately, there is no clear statement in support or unsupport for kepoprofen gel versus ultrasound. A recent study by Rother goes in favor of ketoprofen-free vehicle (TDT 064) rather than ketoprofen gel (IDEA-033) in moderate OA (2). Another group from Turkey could not find a clinically relevant difference amongst ketoprofen phonophoresis, ultrasound, and short-wave diathermy in knee osteoarthritis (3). Let me know if you find otherwise. Hope this helps! Amit
