When we (i.e., geoinformation scientists) are leveraging social media feeds or volunteered geographic information for tasks like event detection, it is kind of common sense that these data sources mainly reflect social events. The term "event" has been defined by the ISO (which has been adapted by the Open Geospatial Consortium). However, I was wondering if there is any accepted definition of that term. Does anybody know if there is some definition available (maybe from Sociology)? And in case it is not: Can we find some event classification that distinguishes different kinds of events by clear properties?

I would say, within the context of Sociology, that a social event is characterized by, on the smallest level, an occurrence that perpetuates change, and even to that greater degree, on the macro level and even meso, events that indeed bring forth change to some degree or another.
