Two black holes collided some 1.3 billion years ago. Subsequently, the joining of those two great masses sent forth a wobble that hurtled through space and arrived at Earth on September 14, 2015. This was when it was picked up by sophisticated instruments back at earth and the phenomenon was observed by two US-based underground detectors. The instrument (detector) is designed to spot tiny vibrations from passing gravitational waves, and is a project known as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory, or LIGO.
So let me explore from the researchers that is anything has discovered which is smaller than LIGO ?
There are other ways of measuring the gravitational field, such as a torsion balance and some variations on the atomic clock, but none are anywhere as sensitive as LIGO.
Keep in mind that LIGO is basically the first generation instrument of its kind. Two more similar observatories are coming online, VIRGO in Europe and KAGRA in Japan. Since they benefit from the experience of LIGO, they will come online faster, and will likely have an improved performance.
Still, for the foreseeable future, direct observation of gravitational waves will remain the domain of very large, very complex instruments.
