Is there a way to transform a function of two variables into one variable?

Hello,

Assume that I have Z=f(x)+g(y).

Is there a way that I can write Z as a function of one variable w that relates f(w) and g(w)?

Yes, f(x) + g(x) = (f + g)(x) = f + g. The answer depends on the functions
