Instead of measuring the distance using stereo vision with two cameras, i want to do it using a single camera. The camera resolution, its view vision and other specifications are known. Its okay if the accuracy of this method is lesser than stereo vision using 2 cameras.
If the camera is allowed to move, one could simulate a parallax of two cameras. If the camera is stationary then the object that one measures the distance to should be moving with known speed, normal to the camera-object line. Or, the object dimensions, instead of its speed, should be known.
For example an airplane is moving along a trajectory normal to the camera-airplane line. The airplane overall length is known, then by simple size comparison one could estimate distance. Further if the airplane's size is unknown but speed is known, one could measure distance by evaluating the trajectory length for a unit of time then elaborate on the obtained triangle.
You can also have a look at the 'depth from focus' or 'depth from defocus' approaches which use one camera. The accuracy may not be great.
