Blockchain is revolutionizing all information and communications technologies. However, many of its functionalities depend on repetitive and computational intensive operations. Is there a way to implement a blockchain in hardware? What would be the benefits? What possible technologies could be employed?

I think that there is a misconception here,
the reason why some blockchain networks consume a lot of computational power is because of the consensus mechanism itself and not because of the blockchain technology per se.
Bitcoin and Ethereum, for example, are distributed blockchain networks that rely on a Proof of Work consensus method to elect a new block, this block is elected by the node who has more power to complete a mathematical problem faster. The bigger the network the more power required to complete those tasks.
There are other consensus method for distributed blockchains(like Proof of Stake) that are not that power hungry.
A private centralized blockchain (non-distributed) or created for specific purposes might not require a consensus method and therefore can run from simple hardware.

Blockchain technology provides an immutable ledger that stores data in blocks so like every piece of software, its logic can be put on hardware but you will need the storage to keep the data; however, based on my previous paragraph , you might want to investigate if this is desired as blockchain nodes can be fully configured to run from many microcomputers
