    Female entrepreneurship takes center-stage this November as Women’s Entrepreneurship Day (WED) launches on November 19, 2014, as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW). The day is an opportunity to celebrate, engage and empower female entrepreneurs.

In many countries around the world, women remain an untapped economic potential. According to the International Labor Organization, there are 812 million women living in developing countries with the potential to contribute more fully to their economies. Furthermore, there is a direct correlation between the policies in place to support women, the opportunities available to women and women’s success in business.

In developing nations, empowering women to be entrepreneurial helps reduce poverty for women, their families and their communities. And yet, the recently released Gender GEDI (Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index) found that in nearly three quarters of the 30 countries surveyed, conditions for female entrepreneurship and business growth were unfavorable.

    This year, GEW is driving a worldwide movement to engage and support female entrepreneurs. The over 150 countries who take part in GEW will be encouraged to organize and promote events on Wednesday November 19 that focus on advancing female entrepreneurship. Additionally, a new WED Ambassador Program has been created that promotes pioneers of female entrepreneurship advocacy like social entrepreneur Wendy Luhabe of South Africa, H.R.H Princess Fay Jahan Ara of India and popular musical group Icona Pop.

The lists such as Entrepreneur of the Year or others are great but have two issues:

a) Generalizability: Even if you had a defition of "top" entrepreneur, you will find it extermely difficult to say what the poplation of them is, and hence, whether the list is a representative sample

b) access: If you work in a qualitative way, generalizablity may be less of an issue, but access to the company. I assume that those entrepreneurs get dozens of reserach inquiries a month. So the key of doing your own research is not a list, but personal resouces.

Also you might look at Davisson "Researching Entrepreneneurship" on what I believe he calls "theoretical campling".

Suggest you may try in Prowess database (provided by Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy) contains a highly normalized database on over 17000 companies. The database is complemented with powerful analytical software tools to enable extensive querying and research.

Futurpreneur Canada launches action plan for a more entrepreneurial

I just received this news as well which may interest future entrepreneurs:

1,000 young entrepreneurs, business and non-profit leaders, policy makers, educators and others came together in 2014 to advance youth entrepreneurship in Canada through face-to-face and virtual roundtable discussions, live chats, surveys, a national summit and more. These activities culminated in a national action plan, Unlocking the Power of Youth Entrepreneurship – An Action Plan for Canada, released today (and attached here) which recommends specific actions that each stakeholder group can take now to better support existing and future entrepreneurs. Check out this video to see how the plan was developed.

   To help advance the plan, Futurpreneur Canada has also developed Action Entrepreneurship Link, an online inventory of programs, activities and events in Canada that support youth entrepreneurship. It allows organizations to demonstrate how they are acting upon the recommendations from entrepreneurs and leaders.
