I'm looking for some kind of study, maybe a survey, that looks at where researchers started their work in terms of ideas and where they ended before publishing it. This could be an idea that they had or a reference that inspired them. It is my belief that researchers often try to tie their initial ideas to their innovative findings in a coherent train of thought before publishing it. But it is also possible that the innovation may have nothing to do with what they started. I wish to check if there is a statistical study on this matter, but I'm not sure what keywords would help me find such a study.

Any book on Research Methodology can also help you. You need to identify research gap, research problem, research questions, research design, variables, hypotheses, sample, measures.

I think that the matter is related to research skills, the more the researcher practiced the more he was able to control the introduction, results, and conclusion of the research, and I am talking about working normally, away from the variables that arise in the research.
Therefore, it needs careful work in the design of the research, to ensure that the objectives of it are achieved.

i think so far as Research Projects are concerned.....there is no starting and end points...... so far as ideas are concerned we put some idea and execute it in either paper..book chapter..article or even we can make it research project..
