I tried to detect emotions in students during group work.
The feedback gave they gave me was good (we hat fun, we were curious about the result, it judged this and that positiv/negative) but the faces mostly showed >neutral< (according to microsoft cognitive services and my own judgement).
Is there a research/book/source that worked on how concentration effects the expression of emotion? I guess that working hard just shoves the emotion in the background without deleting it.
From what I understand from the context you describe, you are searching for emotions experienced during study (in a group/team). There is a line of research (following Pekrun` theory) focusing on the so-called `achievement or academic emotions`. It discusses the experinece of emotion as well as the cognitive antecedents that determine it and the subsequent influences on performance. Hope this can guide your search!

Heidi, the main problem you are facing is discussed in the "facial display" theory (Fridlund and others), which assumes that emotions appear on the face only for communicative purposes. In other words, if you are fully concentrated on your work and do not intend to share your emotion with copresent people there is no reason to to produce facial displays of emotions. We conducted some experiments on facial displays having people watch emotional films and found that joy leaks through anyway. However, the display of negative emotions seems even to be reduced in the presence of others. So you need other methods of measurement than facial obervations.
