the German State of the Art method (PERLODES) uses a "operational taxa list" for the macrozoobenthos, which also includes the standard taxonomic literature for each taxonomic group.

For the amphipoda the following is listed (unfortunately only in German):

Since several years I'm preparing a book on marine and freshwater amphipods of the catchment area of the Baltic Sea including all relevant freshwater species from central Europe (also the invaders from the Ponto-Caspian area). This book will going to the editors in March and will hopefully published during this year. Unfortunately from the subterranean species are only some examples of each genus included. Furthermore, especially the Iberian peninsula and North Africa accomodate several additional species. In my opinion no standard work exist covering all the possible species belonging to this geographical area. However, several single publications of Pinkster (e.g. revision of Echinogammarus) and Karaman (see below) exist.

The information about about freshwater amphipods in the Iberian Peninsula is very fragmentary and scarce. There is a recent review (not a key) of the existing information about amphipods in the Iberian Peninsula and the Macaronesic region (Mazé, 2015), as well as a key to most important families (Mazé & Conradi, 2004), but includes marine fauna. Also, it exists an illustrated guide to families and genera from the Iberian Peninsula (Ortiz & Jimeno, 2001).

However, we use the Karaman's book (1993) and the three-part work by Bellan-Santini et al (1982,1989, 1993) to identify the Iberian amphipods to family/genus level, and checking with specialized papers for endemic taxa, as suggested in other answers.

Gosh! Ton van Haaren, I coauthored recently a paper with Prof. A. Martens on ostracods and didn't know he had published those reviews on german gammarids! I have downloaded them now from the links you provided, thanks! Thanks  also to Michael Groll for the german suggestions.

It's good news Dr. Zettler that you're going to publish a review on marine and freshwater amphipods soon from Central Europe and the Baltic, please let us know when it comes out, looking forward to see it! I think you're right about Karaman and Pinkster publications on particular genera, those will be very helpful for determination to species level.

Thanks (gràcies) Jordi Sala for your suggestions, I have got those publications and found them very useful, particularly for coastal-marine amphipods although some genus (e.g. Eulimnogammarus) are not included e.g. in the Ortiz & Jimeno review. But the Karaman's book is probably more appropriate for freshwaters, as you suggest. I didn't know either about the french work suggested by Alfonso Nebra, thanks! It was difficult to find where to buy it, but finally I found it to be cheap and ordered it from the French Limnological Society here: http://www.limnologie.fr/publications

I also found an old review (Chevreux & Fage 1925) on French Amphipoda for which I had the paper copy and can be downloaded now for free from this link: http://www.faunedefrance.org/bibliotheque/docs/CHEVREUX&FAGE(FdeFr09)Amphipodes.pdf , although perhaps it is too old and confusing for a non-experienced person on amphipods like me.

Many papers are citing the review of Freshwater Amphipoda of the World by Barnard & Barnard (1983) (2 vols), but these seem to be out of print and not available. Does anybody know if they are worth for determination of Western European families and genera? And where to find them?

the two volumes of Barnard & Barnard (1983) are not suitable for determination. This work is more a comprehensive checklist of freshwater amphipods worldwide. I have These volumes as print and as pdf. However, I'm currently on a sea cruise for sampling in the Skagerrak and will be back in the office in February. Please remind me, if it is relevant.
