In recent days, economic internet web pages has been announced that a new very cheap procedure to obtain high purity silicon from sand will end the use of oil as energy source.

First of all: There is a recorded issue about defining the notion of "Sand".
Starting from the "mediterranean approach", we suppose that major component is Silicon tetrachloride.
You may try hence this one-step process. :
SiCl4 + 2X ----------------------------> 2XCl2(s) + Si(HIGH PURITY , experimented ) ;
X here is any appropriate alkaline earth metal (mainly Sr, Mg ....)

could you be so nice to mention the internet economic information your found?.
I have found several papers claiming on simple processing production of "pure" Si from sand, but the question is what is "sand" as said by Karem? Some claims concern with removing of Fe, some other with removing of alcali metals etc...

I totally agree with Pr Fruchart.
The key of the process is the adopted definition of sand (raw, raffinated, Fe-free, selectively purified..etc?)
Once this definition is set, a clear response is possible.
Otherwise, my first answer stands, and we can work conjointly on. (The "mediterranean approach", high chlorinated silicon )
