"Best-in-class" is a term used by businesses to state their ranking - highest current performance level in an industry. Best in class was used as a standard or benchmark to be equaled or exceeded.
Best in class is a given term that can be transcended into other industries for the best practices used to develop the most sophisticated program that promoted the best uses. This is a common term that is widely used in the automobile field such that most current programs are not the best-in-class. Some businesses claim that they have the "best-in-class" use but are not as sophisticated or have enough research done in their area to become the best-in-class. This can even be interpreted as a threat to the industry, such that there has not been enough diligent individuals hired or employed in the industry to commonly argue how these best uses work through research processes.
As far as a new term is labeled, I do not believe there has been any continuous research done in that particular area.
