At present there still seems to be no characterized panel of immunocytochemical antibodies to the different HIV gene products. Yes, there are companies that sell antibodies and you can also obtain them from the NIH AIDS Reagent Program (https://www.aidsreagent.org/index.cfm.) But when you ask such questions as: 1. Can they work on formaldehyde fixed tissue (with or without antigen retrieval)—rarely noted. In particular, antibodies from companies don’t often cite this info. 2. Will the antibodies work with other fixatives, if formalin abolishes reactivity? 3. What is the region they attach to, and, 4. What type of cross reactivity might you get? You can often find this information in individual papers, but there is no overall standardization or clearing house with this information. Moreover, for some of the early papers, the antibodies or even clones no longer exist; while on the other hand, new antibodies are continually being produced without any noted immunohistochemical characterization.
For those who immunohistochemically stain for HIV or its gene products (example: GP-120, TAT, NEF etc), maybe you would like to share your experience with the particular antibodies that you used?
