I'm currently starting to work on a literature review of issues that prevent the recovery of threatened fish species and their populations. One particular subject that has been brought to my attention is the case of populations of a species that establish themselves in an environment or particular location that is different from their ecological niche.
For example, fish species with a life-history adapted to river ecosystems, which after a human intervention have established a population in a lacustrine ecosystem (e.g. dam or reservoir). So, my question is, what do we call this kind of phenomenon?
I'm not quite sure what to search for because I have tried a few things such as self-sustaining populations, population persistence, resilience and others, but not much is turning up. I have some things on the tip of my tongue, but it's not coming to my mind.
