Anyone knows about thermodynamic equilibrium of any (quasi) isolated system of many particles, and temperature of the system, like its principal characteristic. My question is about the time, necessary for reaching of the thermodynamic equilibrium after any impact. How can I calculate this time (for gas or for solid)?
I think the autocorrelation time can be used.
What I mean is calculating the autocorrelation time in equilibrated system as the reference value. Then add the perturbation and set time as zero and perform MD simulation. Calculate the autocorrelation time every several steps. When the autocorrelation time equals the previously calculated reference value, the system becomes equilibrated.
If you have analytical formula of the perturbation, in some cases the eigenvalue can also be used to get the equilibration time, namely the
thermodynamic equilibrium acquisition time.

I think, this method should work.
Originally, I search any relationship between the time of equilibrium and any caracteristics of the system: dimensions, impact value with respect to average energy of particles, etc. In any case, your method will be a good first step in this searching.

Another note I want to add on using this method is that the autocorrelation time for equilibrated system is often shorter than nonequilibrium systems (I mean really nonequilibrium system rather than the nonequilibrium steady state). So the reference equilibrium autocorrelation time should be the minimum value you obtain. This is another merit in using this point.
