Hi,
I am trying to convert PHB into PHB-diol via the Transesterification using 1,4 butanediol/p-toluenesulfonic acid. However, I can't seem to find the anhydrous version for sale anywhere. Hence I would like to kindly ask will there be any effect if I use the monohydrate version instead of the anhydrous version?

Dear Natchanon,
Many chemicals are sold as hydrates, and the water of hydration usually does not interfere with their application for chemical reactions. You should be able to use p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate for your purposes. If you need to prepare the reagent at a specificity molarity, you need only to correct for the molecular weight of the hydrate.

p-TSOH and toluene boil it to remove water by azeotropic distillation then add your other substrate for esterification for more effective reaction
