Is the retrograde femoral nail a safe indication? Is the damage to articular surface of distal femur temporary?

The entry point is in the articular surface of distal femur

In my own practice I avoid retrograde femoral nailing because of the potential articular cartilage damage and subsequent osteoarthritis.

Furthermore TKR becomes complicated in the presence of an retrograde femoral IM nail.

I believe distal femoral anatomical locking plates are good alternatives to retrograde IM nails for distal femoral fractures.
